What is a Daily Scrum?
A daily Scrum represents a short, 15-minute meeting among a small team, usually no more than seven people, to go over what the team needs to move forward to finish certain deliverables in a specific timeframe.
Removing Impediments to Progress
The goal of the Daily Scrum is to remove impediments to proceeding with the plan. A Daily Scrum offers a forum for discussing the facts of what may be holding the team back from making progress. It is not a place for individuals to complain. The Daily Scrum is all about the team.
First, everyone inspects progress in moving towards a goal. Did the team progress from the same time yesterday? Did everyone attain their goals from yesterday? What is holding the team back from moving forward?
If anyone says no to making progress, the team needs to adapt its tasks to stay focused on meeting its monthly goals. What projects can the team put aside until it catches up? What troubleshooting needs to happen?
What impediments are keeping the team from progressing forward in the Sprint? That’s the critical question to answer in the Daily Scrum. Ask other people for help during a Daily Scrum. Determine how to adjust the plan and figure out what needs to happen to meet today’s goals ahead of tomorrow’s Daily Scrum.
When does the Daily Scrum take place?
A Daily Scrum happens every day at the same time. It does not last for more than 15 minutes. Team members should get into this format for Daily Scrums to keep things short and straightforward every workday.
Why are Daily Scrum meetings called Stand-Ups?
Because typically, these happen when team members stand up at their desks and speak to facilitate the Daily Scrum meeting.
Who leads Daily Scrum meetings?
No one. The team self-facilitates and moves forward after the meeting. Someone takes notes to delineate tasks on the to-do list, on-hold list, and completed list. The Daily Scrum offers a forum for team members to discuss how to move forward if they have a problem. Hopefully, the team can resolve the issue before the end of the meeting
Where is the Scrum Master during the Daily Scrum?
Doing whatever that person needs to do. Generally, a Scrum Master does not participate in the Daily Scrum unless special guests are at the meeting.
What is the Daily Scrum NOT?
The Daily Scrum is NOT a status meeting. It’s not a place for everyone to say what they are working on and how a project is coming along. A Daily Scrum offers a forum for people to express how they will help the team move forward with a project’s goals.
It’s not a meeting gripe about anyone or lay blame for someone’s lack of progress.
Remember, Daily Scrum meetings are about how the team, not the individual, can move forward.
Tips for Daily Scrum Meetings
Keep them short, at 15 minutes or less.
Have everyone answer the three questions as briefly as possible.
People should plainly state if they notice any impediments to the team’s progress.
The Daily Scrum is not the only chance someone will have to bring up any impediments to progress. Any team member can bring those up at any time.
