What Is A Sprint Retrospective?

Sprint Retrospective

What is a Sprint retrospective?

A Sprint retrospective occurs after a Sprint completes. Whether that Sprint lasts 30 days or shorter, a Scrum Team examines the previous Sprint for its effectiveness, how well things went, what got accomplished, and what team members can do to improve the next Sprint. It’s part of the continuous improvement model of Scrum.

What is the goal of a Sprint Retrospective?

The overall purpose of a Sprint Retrospective is to plan how to increase the quality and effectiveness of an individual Scrum team as they prepare to move forward into the next Sprint. A Sprint retrospective solely exists to go over the previous Sprint rather than plan for the next Sprint. It helps the team get better irrespective of what tasks need to happen and when.

Who creates or oversees a Sprint Retrospective?

The entire Scrum Team oversees a Sprint Retrospective.

What happens during a Sprint Retrospective?

The Scrum Team collaborate during a Sprint Retrospective to examine how the last Sprint went regarding:

● Individuals and their tasks

● Interactions among team members and other stakeholders

● Processes that occurred or could be improved

● Tools the team used and how effective they were

The elements that the Scrum Team inspects vary depending on the type of work the company does. If the Scrum Team did not accomplish its goals, the section examines how this happened and how to avoid the same problems in subsequent Sprints. The Scrum Team also discusses what went well as team members navigated problem-solving based on whether or not they overcame the previous issues.

How does a Sprint Retrospective help my team improve?

The Scrum team points out the most helpful changes to improve previous processes. This can be done in a separate meeting or even as part of Sprint planning. The Scrum Team members address the most impactful improvements as soon as possible because they can lead to efficiency improvements on the team or company-wide.

What does a Scrum Team discuss during a Sprint Retrospective?

During the Sprint Retrospective, the team discusses:

● What went well during the last Sprint

● What could be improved based on the outcome of the previous Sprint

● What to commit to improving during the next Sprint and subsequent Sprints

Improving processes for the next Sprint makes the work more enjoyable for everyone on the Scrum Team. The Sprint Retrospective allows a Scrum Team to plan for those improvements. They can redefine what it means to finish the next Sprint. But completing the goal cannot conflict with organizational or product standards.

How long does a Sprint Retrospective last?

For a 30-day Sprint, a Sprint Retrospective lasts no more than three hours. For shorter Sprints, a Sprint Retrospective should be shorter. If your Sprints last for two weeks, then a Sprint Retrospective should be no more than 90 minutes.

Why is a Sprint Retrospective valuable to the Scrum Team?

Every Sprint Retrospective gives teams a chance to improve their processes moving forward as part of the continuous improvement model inherent in the Scrum Framework.

What happens after a Sprint Retrospective?

Sprint planning happens next, whereby Scrum teams plan what to do during the next Sprint, including how to implement the improvements discussed in a Sprint Retrospective.
